A New Day

Thanks to everyone who commented or prayed for us after the last blog post.  Our days have been going so much better.  One day it occurred to me that I get sick of doing the same things and enjoy a new “project” sometimes so I sat down and made a list of things the kids could do that aren’t everyday occurrences around here.  It made a tremendous difference just to have some things to keep them occupied.  We listened to audiobooks (we do this a lot, but I got a few new ones), we wrote letters to the great grandparents (which I now need to mail, oops), we made pillow mountains, brought the snow inside, and I still have some things on my list for the next time I need some activities.  =)

One night Creighton woke Lincoln up and asked him to read to him.  Of course, Lincoln agreed and in the morning I found them like this.

The last couple of years we have taken the older kids out to eat and then let them use their Christmas money.  Our outing got cancelled a couple of times due to the snow, but we were finally able to go this past weekend.  Thanks A. Joyce for watching Creighton and Anya!

Lastly, we’re pretty pumped in this house about the coming of our newest niece or nephew in August.  =)

Winter Slump

Well, it’s winter. : ) I wish that statement invoked warm feelings and lovely memories of hours of snuggles and fun snow day memories.  That is just not that way things have gone in our house the past two weeks.  One snow day the kids had lost all technology privileges indefinitely before 8am.  Another snow day everyone declared themselves “bored” before we’d even had breakfast.  Kate summed it up well this morning for our household when she said, “I am so over winter.”  Amen sister.  But then I was over it December. ; )

It’s been a season of discipline and testing here at our house.  It seems each kid has picked an issue to deal with that requires lots of instruction, discipline, attention, etc.  There has been a lot of fighting and relearning of the house rules.  It’s been hard for me.  I know some of this is due to some all around winter blues and sleep deprivation due to ear infections and sleep rebellion. Several days lately I have began the day “feeling” like I just can’t do this today.  I just don’t feel like dealing with a teething infant and the thrilling 3’s and children who act entitled and ungrateful, with a child who could care less about their grades at school.

But, while it is REALLY easy for me to dwell on the hard parts, the days have had some moments of victory and I’m trying to train myself to dwell more in these places.  The child struggling to care enough to try at school, brought home an A on a test, the child who wouldn’t eat their food and got told their was nothing else for them to eat, eventually came back to the table and ate their food, the kids who lost all forms of technology have been seen playing games together and using their imaginations in all kinds of fantastic ways.  I’ve gotten texts from some good friends to make me laugh, such as “I really have not heard a peep out of u all day, which concerns me because I know in the psyche ward they first take away all outside contact.”  And others that just reminded me that they were praying for me and my peace and resolve.  God has really blessed me with some really great friends in this season of my life and I’m truly grateful to have people to walk thru the highs and lows of parenting with.

I guess my point in writing all this is simply to remind me, it’s never as bad as I make it out to be.  There is almost always more going right than going wrong in my life.  It’s all a matter of perspective and it is past time for me to rejoin the land of gratitude and contentment in my circumstances.  Sounds familiar doesn’t it.  In a lot of ways, I’m not any different than my kids.  Daily working on becoming more like Jesus and less like the selfish, ungrateful, entitled person it is so easy to be.

Enough about all that.  Now, while I share these perfect looking pictures, please remember, it’s just really hard to take pictures of kids fighting and mass chaos, although maybe I’ll try that this week, it may help diffuse some situations. : )

Mike and Lincoln went to a Men’s Deer Fry, so I let Kate pick out dinner for the rest of us.  She picked, cheeseburgers, breadsticks, donut holes, and Kool-Aid.  My stomach may have turned over at the grocery store when she was picking it out.  : )

For a lot of reasons, I admire Lincoln.  Probably because he is our child who is most like Mike.  He has his brain and his patience.  He was practicing his piano lessons the other day and was still willing to let Anya sit on his lap, even though it took him a lot longer and she was not necessarily helpful.

When Kate and Lincoln get home from school, no one is happier than Anya.

Kate and Lincoln spent one of their snow days making their Valentine’s Day boxes.  They worked on these with no help from me.  Well, I googled Big Ben Images for Kate, but that’s it.

Creighton and Anya are starting to play together!  Most of the time they still just fight, but we’re making positive progress.

With that, enjoy the rest of your day.  : )

It was the best of times–lots of pictures

We just got back from our annual Florida vacation and I have to copy Mr. Dickens and say, It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.   I will start with some of the lows.  Not ideal weather, a 14 month old getting her molars (very cranky and got up at 5:30am every day), a 3 year old who got dehydrated and puked all over the motel room rug, me, and the side of our bed.  However, there were not many lows and we survived them all.  There were many more highs.  I loved being able to sit around the poolside tables talking with my grandparents in the mornings, spending early mornings with my dad (and Anya), sitting at the beach with my parents, watching Creighton’s delight at every little thing, Anya’s love for the outdoors, Kate’s love of the sea aquarium and the beach, Lincoln’s determination to beat Mike at every game they played together, the water taxi date, and the time spent talking with Brett and Tessa, J. Alexander’s, and all the help with the kids made it an enjoyable time.

It was another year full of great memories with Grams and Popsy, Mom and Dad, and Brett, Tessa, and Jocie.  It was really fun to see vacation thru the kids’ eyes and the thrill that everything was to them.  We are so blessed.

The days when the weather was warm enough, we spent the morning playing at the beach.  Creighton would spend several hours running in and out of the ocean.  Kate loved the beach more than the other kids and would spend hours building sand castles, searching for shells, and playing in the waves.

I feel like this pictures truly captures the heart of this boy.  He loves life and does everything with great spirit.  He constantly makes me laugh and absolutely exhausts me trying to keep ahead of him.  =)  I will share just one of the funny things he said on vacation.  On our last day we were at the store, picking out souvenirs.  He had 3 picked out and was crying because I told him he had to pick one.  A foreign woman felt bad for him and came up to him and was trying to help.  In her thick accent she said, “It ok, jus’ pick.”  He looked at her and said, “I’m not a pig, I’m a boy!”  Oh dear.

One of the cloudy days we went to the Miami Sea Aquarium.  Kate loved every minute of it.

The picture on the left is what happened when that dolphin landed right by where they were standing.  They got soaked and Kate was delighted.  The rest of the crowd opted to get a little further away from the water.  =)

Kate wanted to sit in the splash zone for each show and her grandpa graciously sat with her.  Notice how they are in the front row for the killer whale show.

I missed the shot where they got absolutely soaked because I was laughing too hard, but notice how they moved up a couple of rows.  Dad was soaked clear thru and never quit smiling.  He absolutely made Kate’s day.  Thanks, Dad!

Thanks to Grams and Popsy and Dad and Mom, we (Mike and I) along with Brett and Tessa, took Kate and Lincoln on a “big kid” date.  We took the water taxi and then ate at The Cheesecake Factory.
